Originally Tenochitlan, the capital of the Aztec and Triple Alliance Empire leading into the early 16th Century when Spain, under the command of Hernan Cortes, conquered the Aztec leader, Montezuma and his kingdom.  Today’s Mexico City is the densely populated, high altitude capital of Mexico, known for the 13th Century Aztec temple, Templo Mayor, the baroque Catedral Metropolitan de Mexico of the Spanish conquistadors, and the Palacio Nacional which houses historic murals by Diego Rivera, all of which are situated in and around the Plaza de la Constitution, the massive main square also known as the Zocalo.  Similar to other world-class cities, commerce, culture, and a thriving community of residents and visitors make any visit fulfilling and rewarding.
